The European programme for testing and certifying environmentally friendly and socially responsible office and contract furniture.

The certificate is based on the FEMB sustainability standard and is the first European certificate to combine all relevant aspects of sustainability. It covers four areas of impact: materials, energy and atmosphere, chemical management, and social responsibility. This represents a holistic approach that covers the requirements of sustainable public procurement (green public procurement) and the circular economy.

Level has three certification levels. Products can be awarded Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3. The classification is based on the number of points achieved. The highest achievable rank is Level 3. The certification is based on the sustainability standard for office and contract furniture for indoor use developed by the European Office Furniture Federation (FEMB). This was created taking into account the American ANSI/BIFMA-e3 standard, European criteria for environmentally friendly public procurement and the specifications of other voluntary eco-labels.

Product certification: Level is a programme with a multi-attribute standard for sustainability in the furniture industry and accredited certification by independent certification bodies. The Level certification process not only examines the product, but also the production facility or facilities where it was manufactured and the organisation itself, assessing them in terms of four impact areas: ‘materials’, ‘energy and atmosphere’, ‘chemicals management’ and ‘social responsibility’.

In August 2025, the 1,000th product was successfully certified according to the European LEVEL certification system for sustainable office and contract furniture! This significant milestone impressively underscores the industry’s growing commitment to greater sustainability and transparency along the entire value chain. LEVEL sets standards across Europe when it comes to the independent assessment and certification of sustainable furniture products – from material selection and production to social and environmental aspects.
